Custom Aquarium Volume Calculators

Custom tanks are built to fit a space rather than a catalogue. Most can be broken into rectangles, triangles and arcs. The L-shaped and trapezoid calculators cover the two most common custom footprints, and almost any other layout can be assembled from them plus the standard shapes.

How custom tanks are measured

Sketch the footprint from above, draw cut lines that divide it into simple pieces, and measure each piece separately. Keep all pieces at the same height or calculate them one at a time.

Formula differences

L-shape: (L1 × W1 + L2 × W2) × H. Trapezoid: ½ × (B1 + B2) × D × H. Other custom shapes are sums and differences of these and the standard formulas.

Common mistakes

  • Double counting the corner where the two legs of an L overlap.
  • Measuring the angled side of a trapezoid instead of the perpendicular depth.
  • Adding sections that are not actually water-filled, such as dry land areas.
